How to measure fuel remaining
- Most accurate: pour the leftover fuel from the tank into a small graduated measuring container (a syringe or fuel bottle with mL/oz markings works well) and read it directly.
- Alternative: weigh the car (or just the fuel tank, if removable) before and after a run on a gram scale, and convert using nitro fuel’s density (roughly 0.87g per mL, since nitro/methanol/oil blends are slightly lighter than water) — though pouring and measuring directly is more reliable.
- Run time should be measured from engine start to engine off. Time the run with a stopwatch rather than running the tank dry — letting the engine lean out from an empty tank can cause engine damage.
- Enter run time as minutes and seconds (like
5:30) or as plain decimal minutes (like5.5).

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my burn rate change between runs?
Needle settings (rich vs. lean), track load (jumps, elevation, loose vs. hard-packed dirt), and how much you’re on the throttle all affect burn rate run to run. Treat any single calculation as a snapshot for that run’s conditions, and re-check it if you change your tune or track.
Should I run the tank dry to get an accurate number?
No — don’t intentionally run a tank dry to measure full-tank time. Letting the engine lean out as it runs out of fuel can damage it, since a lean engine runs hotter and can lose lubrication right before it dies. Instead, just time a normal run and measure the fuel remaining afterward — that gives you the same information without the risk of damage to your engine.
Does tank size alone tell me how long I can run?
No — two cars with identical tank sizes can have very different run times depending on engine size, gearing, needle tune, and driving style. That’s why this calculator is built around your actual measured burn rate rather than a generic tank-size chart.
Why is “Tanks Needed” rounded up instead of showing a decimal?
You can’t refuel mid-tank in the middle of a run, so if your math says you need 1.4 tanks for a main, you need 2 tanks’ worth of fuel on hand (with some left over) — rounding up reflects what you’d actually need to bring to avoid running dry.
Does this work for 1/8 buggy/truggy and 1/10 nitro touring/off-road the same way?
Yes — the math is the same regardless of scale or class. The main difference between 1/8 and 1/10 nitro is typically tank size and burn rate (1/8 engines are larger and burn more fuel per minute), which this calculator already accounts for since you’re entering your own measured numbers.
